On April 5 Telecoms 2018 industry regulator Ofcom held the spectrum auction where £1.35bn was spent on 4G and 5G airwaves by all four major operators. Yet the National Infrastructure Commission said the UK is being held back by poor mobile phone connectivity. They called for an end to ‘digital deserts’ where parts of the country have no 3G or 4G coverage at all, here in the UK. In fact in 2016 in the most recent survey published the UK ranked 54th for 4G coverage in the world. So we ranked behind so called ‘2nd and 3rd world developing’ countries like Albania, Panama, Peru and Romania.
‘This 3G/4G or nothing dotted coverage of the country is frankly a joke, mobile carriers are clearly continuing to place profit motivations over real coverage commitments. Clearly mobile operators in the UK need to increase their investments in 4G coverage to put an end to these ‘digital deserts’ as soon as possible. This involves the mobile carriers spending money and upgrading masts to 4G in rural areas where little to no data connectivity is often experienced. Before mobile carriers start thinking about 5G, a focus on 4G is definitely required.’ Tynan O’Hara – 08UK Sales Director.
