UK 0844 numbers call rates from BT landlines cost between 1p/min and 4.2p/min depending upon the exact number dialed. All 0844 493 calls for instance are charged at 4.2p/min, the cost code for this range is known as G6. Other codes like G11 relate to other lower charged 0844 numbers.

To be clear it is the UK mobile networks in particular that effectively over-charge for calls to these numbers, from UK landlines calls to 0844 numbers cost only penny's as opposed to maybe £1+ for a similar UK mobile call which lasted say 5 minutes. Calls from UK mobiles do cost much more, mobile rates of anything up to 30p/minute can apply to pay-as-you-go handsets. This is true of all 08 numbers when called from mobile networks including 0800 numbers, although this is going to change very soon we believe.
